Meet Our Speakers

Louise Southwood Parente, BVSc, MS, PhD, DACVS, DACVECC, graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 and completed a locum at Hagley Equine Hospital in Hagley, Tasmania. After completion of a Large Animal Internship at Washington State University (1994/1995), she pursued a Large Animal Surgery Residency at Colorado State University (1995-1998) followed by a PhD studying fracture healing (1999-2002). She became board certified in Large Animal Surgery in 2000 and Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care in 2005. She is currently a Clinical Educator Professor of Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania. Her clinical and research interests are in equine emergency surgery particularly colic and gastrointestinal disease. She has edited two textbooks on Practical Guide to Equine Colic (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013) and Equine Emergency and Critical Care (Manson Publishing, 2014) for which she is planning a second edition when she has time. She is the proud mother of three amazing young adults.
